It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
