It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
