It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
