It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
