As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
