It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
