It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
