It may look like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
