It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
