It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
