It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
