It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
