It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
