It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
