It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
