It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
