It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
