It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
