It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
