It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
