It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
