It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
