It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
