It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
