trunk or treat flyer template
It may look like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
