It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
