It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
