two week calendar template
It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
