It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
