It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
