It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
