It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
