It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
