It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
