It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
