It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
