It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
