It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
