It may look like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
