It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
