It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
