It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
