It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
