It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
