It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
