It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
