It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
