It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
