It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
