It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
